On August 19 to 21, 2026, Outdoor Retailer 2026 took a deliberate step outside the traditional exhibit hall. The event combined its layout at the Minneapolis Convention Center with active outdoor locations around Minneapolis. Organizers treated the city itself as an extension of the floor plan. This shift established a new baseline for how brands present physical products to buyers.

Rather than confining attendees to carpeted aisles, the show tested whether a hybrid environment could drive better qualified interactions. The organizers prioritized different ways for buyers to engage with merchandise directly. Moving the activation outdoors required brands to prove their claims in the elements. This structural change pushed field marketing teams to rethink their standard deployment strategies.

The Floor Reality

The Minneapolis debut attracted more than 1,800 attendees and over 275 exhibiting brands. Participants traveled from 45 U.S. states and 20 countries to evaluate the new format. According to the organizers, the show surpassed its goal of attracting 400 qualified retailers. The structural updates prioritized active product demonstrations over passive booth scanning.

Startups and emerging companies utilized compact 3-by-3-foot booths inside the convention center. This tight footprint acknowledged that young brands often rely on one or two hero products. The event also featured the Ascent Summit for emerging leaders. It brought together 75 up-and-coming founders for workshops and peer-led sessions focused on scaling, retail distribution, and brand growth.

Programs associated with the show included Garage Grown Gear, Founded Outdoors, and REI Path Ahead Ventures. These programs collectively represented more than 150 founder-led brands. Giving small brands a dedicated platform allowed them to prioritize targeted buyer meetings. It also proved that trade shows as a growth channel depend on strategic positioning rather than massive square footage.

The outdoor programming centered on the inaugural 57hours Adventure Race at Theodore Wirth Park. More than 75 attendees navigated a 90-minute choose-your-own-adventure orienteering course with hidden checkpoints. A 57hours trip to Greenland was offered as the grand prize for competitors. The Minnesota Orienteering Club helped build the course, and The Loppet Foundation supported the operations.

Brand integrations moved seamlessly into the natural environment during the race. Winnebago, Red Wing Boots, and Granite Gear supported the competition with prizes. Frost River distributed waxed-canvas bags containing local products to the attendees. Gallant Tiger used the physical challenge to distribute peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches to participants.

The Value of Natural Habitats

Putting a product in its natural habitat creates a faster path to consumer trust. Experiential marketing must be built around how a person actually uses the item. The Gallant Tiger sampling moment worked because the brand placed a natural consumption moment into a physical activity. When buyers test gear in a credible environment, casual conversations shift quickly into commercial intent.

Trade-show research cited by CenterPoint found that 75 percent of attendees valued interactive product displays. In contrast, only 46 percent of attendees valued static displays. Recent event research cited by OAAA found that 80 percent of surveyed adults said live product or retailer events made them more likely to remember a brand. Another 80 percent said experiencing a product in person made them more likely to consider it.

The same OAAA research reported that 40 percent of people who attended a live marketing event made a purchase. Furthermore, 38 percent of those attendees tried a product sample. These metrics show that securing a strong Return on Investment requires more than passive browsing. Brands need physical spaces that invite hands-on participation.

Our team knows the value of moving beyond static setups. We designed and managed a 40 by 20 foot trade show environment for Glanbia at Natural Products Expo West 2025. Bringing think!, Isopure, Optimum Nutrition, and Amazing Grass into one space required treating the booth as an active sampling habitat. We handled concept, operations, staffing, and breakdown across the entire activation.

The activation successfully distributed more than 14,000 recorded product samples. A Director of Brand Strategy in the CPG snack division shared: "The Makai team turned our product launch into a sensory event that shoppers still talk about. From creative storytelling to flawless in-store execution, they made snack time unforgettable. We couldn't have asked for a stronger partner." Our team created an in-store experience that left a lasting impression on consumers.

Adapting Logistics for the Wild

Taking an activation into the elements completely resets the logistical baseline. An outdoor race requires strict coordination regarding permits, weather contingencies, and safety protocols. Field staffing models must adapt when brand ambassadors operate on muddy trails instead of carpeted floors. You need teams capable of maintaining energy and executing precise data capture under highly variable conditions.

Outdoor Retailer 2026 also merged physical participation with digital reach through its Wild Reach initiative. The program matched participating exhibitors with more than 150 creators through a partnership with Popfly. The organizer reported more than 850 onsite exhibitor-creator connections and a combined creator-reached audience of 21.2 million people. Managing this integration means field teams must facilitate content creation flawlessly.

Across our history, we have delivered more than 1,000 campaigns in all 50 states for more than 200 brands. That range gives us deep experience across different products, audiences, and market conditions. We know that complex activations demand rigorous lead qualification protocols. How global brands master U.S. trade show execution often comes down to tracking lead progression immediately after the physical engagement.

Real Responses from the Field

The shift in environment fundamentally changes the tone of buyer conversations. The outdoor race required participants to navigate checkpoints while working in teams and experiencing Minneapolis firsthand. Viktor Marohnić, founder of 57hours, noted that the event allowed attendees to experience the city through movement, navigation, and teamwork. The physical challenge broke down traditional business formalities quickly.

Stephen Regenold, strategic advisor to 57hours and founder of GearJunkie, pointed out that the participants' energy helped broker the broader energy of the event. Regenold also described seeing people get wet and muddy reaching checkpoints before heading to the downtown business sessions. When attendees enter a corporate meeting fresh from a physical challenge, they evaluate products differently. The shared outdoor experience replaces the usual rigid sales pitch with genuine engagement.

Evaluating Your Next Move

A VP of Marketing in the CPG beverage category recently told us: "Robbie, your leadership and vision turned our campaign into something truly special. The Makai team brought our new drink to life with energy, creativity, and flawless execution. Thanks to you, our brand isn't just tasted, it's remembered." Our team's approach transformed their product launch into a memorable brand experience.

Building those lasting brand moments requires treating the physical space as an active product demonstration. The most effective campaigns meet buyers where the item actually belongs. When consumers can test performance outside a sterilized convention hall, the resulting trust scales faster. As you evaluate your calendar of upcoming retail activations, are your physical spaces proving what your product does or just repeating what the packaging says?
